We cannot guarantee all allergens will be filtered by the PRO and BASIC masks and therefore should only be worn as an extra precaution as opposed to a preventative measure. Allergens vary in size with the most common allergens between 0.1-100 microns. Our masks cover the nose and mouth, and so long as they are fitted correctly they will filter inhaled air. The Cambridge Mask has been independently tested to block almost 100% of particles from 0.3 microns and up.
This article covers the following topics:
Egg allergies develop when the immune system becomes sensitised to proteins in egg whites or yolks. When consumed, the body sees the protein as a foreign invader and sends out chemicals to defend against it. The most common cause of allergic reactions to eggs is due to ingestion rather than inhalation. The allergen that causes a reaction in egg allergy is variable, with different people reacting to different proteins from the egg.
Peanut allergies are generally considered separate from tree nut allergies, it is common for people to be allergic to all nuts. Physical symptoms of the can include anaphylaxis shock, itchiness, urticaria, swelling, eczema, sneezing, asthma, abdominal pain, drop in blood pressure, diarrhea, and cardiac arrest.
Fruit allergies are often linked to pollen allergies and are sometimes known as “hay fever of the mouth”. OAS ( pollen-food syndrome) is an allergic reaction to certain proteins in a variety of fruits, vegetables, and nuts. The symptoms include itching and burning of the lips, mouth, and throat. In more serious reactions, there may be swelling of the mouth, back of the throat, and windpipe as well as hives. In very severe cases inhalation or ingestion of airborne fruit allergens can cause a reaction.
Allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever, is a type of inflammation in the nose which occurs when the immune system overreacts to pollen in the air. Symptoms include a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, red, itchy, and watery eyes, and swelling around the eyes. Pollen particles can be from 10 - 1000 microns in size and therefore offers protection from pollen. Hay fever attacks are usually associated with seasonal pollen emissions in Spring/Summer or from activities such as gardening/lawn-mowing etc.
Shellfish allergy is caused when the immune system responds to proteins in certain shellfish. The types of shellfish include marine animals with shells, such as shrimp, crab, oysters, and lobster, as well as octopus, squid, and scallops.
